Proctored Exams – The Ideal Tool for Assessments

It is very important to understand the essential philosophy of a proctored exam before diving into its technical aspects.

At its very core, a proctored exam is a remote online assessment that allows candidates to attend exams from the comfort of their homes while being kept under web-cam supervision. This gives them a great deal of flexibility and the familiar domestic setting can keep nervousness at bay. It can help companies find and employ some of the most talented individuals from across the globe in a fair, reliable, and highly economical process.

So, what are the problems that are frequently encountered by proctored exams and how are they generally solved? We shall look at this in the following topic.

Common issues with proctored exams:

The problems with proctored exams are quite apparent. These problems, however, have verified and reliable solutions. A later section of this article deals with the solutions.

Firstly, online proctored exams require a completely impartial and incorruptible proctor. This person should be prepared to answer all the candidate’s questions during any point in the exam. The proctor is also expected to closely monitor the candidate without doing anything else for the entire duration of the exam. While it can be argued that an exam invigilator in an exam hall also suffers the same fate, it is not quite true. A proctor cannot walk around or do anything that does not involve active monitoring of the candidate.

The same issue is faced by the candidate. If they get up from their seat during the exam even to open the door or turn on a light, the exam is immediately cancelled. The candidate is expected to be completely dedicated to the test without flinching. While this might not seem like a major issue, distractions are almost unavoidable when a person is in the comfort of their home.

The candidate may also have other means of cheating that are not directly apparent to the proctor.

The solutions to the above problems:

The candidates are always instructed by the proctor to reveal every detail of the room or environment in which they will be taking the exam. If there are any objects or notes that might aid the student in the online test, the proctor promptly asks the candidate to put it out of the room.

The proctor is expected to ask the candidate to reveal any hidden notes or devices hidden in clothing that can access the internet or store data during the test. The candidate’s desktop is also shared with the proctor to ensure that nothing is accessed online without the knowledge of the proctor.  Most forms of cheating can be curbed using these methods.

As mentioned before, the student is expected to set everything up before the exam begins. After a point, the candidate will not be allowed to move around or do anything that is unrelated to the exam.

To conclude, proctored exams are an excellent way to conduct long-distance tests. A good proctor and a secure testing environment along with an excellent internet connection on both sides will ensure a smooth and effective examination procedure.
