Types of Interviews You’ll Encounter on the Job Hunt

If your resume passes muster, you’ll likely have an initial phone interview with the recruiter. Expect to receive questions about your background, professional skills, hobbies, and goals. You will also be asked to introduce yourself and explain why you wish to work for that particular employer.

The initial screening may also take place online via Skype or other platforms that allow for video calls. Dress professionally and act just like you would during a face-to-face interview.

Group Interviews

These types of interviews are becoming more and more popular, especially in big companies like IKEA and Amazon. Since they receive hundreds or thousands of applications, it’s easier for them to assess multiple candidates simultaneously.

To increase your chances of success, prepare yourself ahead of time and pay attention to your body language. Try to maintain eye contact with the recruiters and act naturally.

Before leaving, ask for business cards from those who interviewed you. If you don’t hear back within a week or two, send them a follow-up email or a thank you message and inquire about your application.

Panel Interviews

Group and panel interviews have one thing in common: they are conducted by several recruiters or HR experts.

Ideally, try to find out who will be on the panel. Research their professional backgrounds and try to find something you can relate to.

For example, if one of the recruiters is an environmental activist, you can mention your interest in green technology.

Again, it’s important to maintain eye contact and use appropriate body language. Make sure you remember the recruiters’ names so that you don’t mix them up.
